Honor teases the Magic V, its first foldable flagship

Formerly a sub-brand of Huawei, Honor is stepping out of the shadow of its bigger sibling. Honor has launched several flagship smartphones since stepping away from Huawei – mostly to sidestep the ban by the United States – but it isn’t doing a half bad job so far. Honor has now teased its first foldable flagship smartphone, dubbed the Magic V, which is set to diverge from Huawei’s foldable plans.

On its Weibo page, Honor has said that the “folding flagship is about to be released” without any specifics about dates. Presumably it could be made public during CES 2022, although Honor might want to hold its own event to show off its first foldable.

Honor has been open about its desire to release a foldable for some time. As early as 2019, the company’s CEO George Zhao said that he was interested in producing a foldable under the Honor brand, but expressed concerns that the device would be too expensive for Honor’s younger target market.

While we don’t have a lot of details about the upcoming foldable, some leaks and rumours have come to light that could be accurate. A recent reports suggested that it could have an 8.03-inch folding inner display paired with a 6.45-inch outer screen. This means that it is a foldable like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which unfolds to become a tablet, rather than the newly announced Huawei P50 Pocket, which folds up to be more pocketable.
