A new iPhone bug has emerged that will fully disable the WiFi hardware on the device. It occurs when connecting to a strange WiFi connection name, which will cause a lot of headaches for any iPhone users connecting to it. Security researcher Carl Shou has discovered this naming bug, that will make your iPhone lose WiFi functionality.

It seems to be a character-based bug, which aren’t new in the technology world. If the WiFi connection has a lot of percentage characters, e.g. “%p%o%s%e%s%n,” it may completely break the phones ability to connect to any other WiFi network again.
Luckily, there is a (cumbersome) way to fix the device again. You must go to the network settings, through Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Although the actual cause isn’t known, it has been speculated by a group of developers that iOS might confuse the % entries with programming commands that use it in the code. According to the developers, it is common practice to test various devices and software with strange names which is easily used to detect “poorly developed devices.” The problem was found on iOS 14.4.2, but is was replicable in iOS 14.6 as well.
