You can now watch 4K HDR video on the Android YouTube app

In a move to future proof the app for future devices, Google has updated the YouTube app on its Android platform with the capability to play videos in 4K HDR (high dynamic range). At the moment there is really only one smartphone that can take advantage of the feature – the Sony Xperia 1 Mark II.

Interestingly, the feature has been available on iOS for some time already.

As long as the uploaded video was originally 4K or larger, and had HDR, you get both options in the quality selection pop-up in the app. This is true on any smartphone, regardless of whether the device itself has a display that can support the pixel density (for people that want to push their data usage, I guess).
