SA Apps make Huawei’s UP developer competition shortlist

By now it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Huawei is largely involved in app development with the main objective being to add to its AppGallery. The company also has a Global app developer competition which, following a regional judging session in Dubai, highlighted how local developers were well represented in the 20 App finalist shortlist. All the apps will be sent for judging on a global level, four of which are South African, namely “My Pregnancy Journey”, “Load Shedding Notifier”, “Gauntlet”, and “Slug Hunter”.

My Pregnancy Journey” is an educational pregnancy App that focuses on Africa and the unique challenges that African women face when it comes to pregnancy. Aiming to empower women with everything they need to know about pregnancy health and parenting, the App has a mountain of resources to make every woman’s unique pregnancy journey a beautiful journey.

Load Shedding Notifier” ensures that you are not left in the dark unexpectedly due to load shedding. The App monitors the current Eskom load shedding schedule in real-time and notifies the user if their electricity is scheduled to go off in their area. All Eskom supplied areas and all known municipality supplied areas that have schedules are covered. It also includes configurable alerts, configuration for multiple areas and power grid status monitoring.

Gauntlet” is a retro gaming App, which is rooted in 80s popular culture. Players take control of a super jet on a mission to destroy evil alien invaders. With fast-paced action, players will need quick reflexes to accomplish the tagline of the game, which is ‘be the hero that mankind needs’. “Gauntlet” is free to download from HUAWEI AppGallery, so get playing today.

Slug Hunter” is a space game, which sees you play as protagonist Kyle, a geologist working at Facility 7 on Mars. However, the facility has become overrun by man-eating space slugs, and it is up to you to evade and eliminate them in order to make it safely back to earth. Keeping your nerve and staying calm is crucial.

The local developers of the above apps stand a chance of winning a share of $1 million. Public voting has already taken between 5 – 19 November weighing in on the 20 shortlisted apps, the regional apps, as well as the finalists from the other global regions. The winners of the global competition will be announced towards mid-December.

A total of 17 apps from Mzansi made the cut and have been sent for regional judging. They are:
