The Last of Us series has been greenlit by HBO

For many PlayStation gamers The Last of Us was a generation-defining game first launched in 2013. It was a masterclass in gameplay in its genre, but also in storytelling. This is a major reason why HBO first showed interest in creating a TV series years ago, but it has been in limbo for years. Now it has been confirmed that HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has been given the green light with a series order.

The series will be created by Neil Druckmann who is working as both a writer and executive producer (the writer and creative director of both The Last of Us and its sequel) alongside Craig Mazin (famous for creating the critically acclaimed Chernobyl). HBO’s Carolyn Strauss, who executive produced both Game of Thrones and Chernobyl, will also serve as an executive producer on The Last of Us.

The official synopsis has also been released, clearly being adapted from the first game in the series. “The story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

Of course, we have no indication of when the series will be ready to be flighted. It can be expected to take some time – video game adaptations haven’t had the best track record – because HBO wants to get it right. No casting details have been shared either, but it will be vital for the success of the series as the story and relationship between Joel and Ellie will make or break it.

The Last of Us isn’t the only major PlayStation exclusive game that is being adapted into a series. The Uncharted series will be launched in 2021 and start Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.
