The Oppo rolling display smartphone concept is stunning tech

For a second year the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo – which has recently launched in South Africa – held an “Inno Day,” where it shows off its latest and greatest innovations. It uses the showcase to unveil its concepts which it believes will move the dial for the future of the industry. This year’s main attraction is a smartphone with an expandable rolling display, and it’s absolutely beautiful.

The Oppo X 2021 smartphone concept is a result of the company’s research and development of flexible displays. In the regular form factor it looks and feels like a normal smartphone with a 6.7-inch display. It can be expanded, however, to a squarer 7.4-inch display that then feels like a small tablet.

Oppo says it developed its own power train, structural plate, and screen laminate to ensure the device’s durability. You can see it in action below.

It isn’t the first time we have seen such a concept, but the Oppo version is a lot more refined than what we have seen before. Oppo is one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers and could potentially being this type of phone to market.
