Telkom and the SABC shake hands on a new streaming deal

Telkom and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) have partnered in a new Video-on-Demand streaming deal which will see the latter’s content aired on the new TelkomOne streaming service.

Amidst the SABC’s recent focus on diversifying its revenue, the broadcaster has confirmed that its content will become available on TelkomOne, where Telkom will settle a licensing fee and further hand over a portion of its advertising income.

The service will stream the SABC’s live television channels, including 1, 2, and Sport – and will further air the broadcaster’s 19 radio stations in what is envisaged as a five-year partnership.

In a press release, Telkom chief executive Sipho Maseko quipped that “We are excited about the opportunity to provide South Africans with free access to watch their favourite SABC content, online, when and wherever they want.

TelkomONE will make it possible for subscribers to pause, go back into the programme guide (time-shift) and instantly watch a scheduled TV show they may have missed. Telkom is making digital TV functionality available to all”, he elaborated.

Customers will be able to browse and register on the platform for free to access a mixture of news and entertainment channels including Africa news, Hope Channel, SBN, and more.

Further, customers will additionally be able to subscribe to AMP subscription packages that bundle music, short films, TV series on a Daily, Weekend, Weekly, and Monthly package that will retail for R7, R17, R19, and R49 ZAR respectively. The bundles will further come with a respective data allotment of 90, 360, 720, and 1800MB.
