In an attempt to garner more subscribers, Showmax Free has been launched in South Africa that is available free of charge. Showmax Free is an ad-supported streaming service which offers many of the same local and international series, movies and sports as on the regular Showmax service.

It can be accessed via the Showmax site or mobile app, and doesn’t need any personal details to be shared or sign-up to be done. It doesn’t have access to all of the content on Showmax, but gives them a taste of what the service is like free of charge.
To activate free streaming on mobile:
- Download and install the latest version of the Showmax app
- Open the Showmax app and tap on the “more” menu icon
- Switch on free mode
- You will be automatically redirected to the home screen where you can then start watching free shows
On laptop or PC:
- Go to free catalogue and start watching
This works differently to the service’s 14-day free trail, where an account is created and the user has full access to the entire library of content. If the account isn’t cancelled after the trial period the user starts paying the normal fee to keep watching the entire library of content.
“Downloads aren’t available but you can watch online anytime, on any screen. No sign up or billing details required,” Showmax said. It said that the free library will include a select list of shows, including “early seasons of much-loved favourites”, as well as a short list of international movies. Showmax said that it will also offer sports highlights and “occasional live matches”.
This is another addition to the staple, with Showmax Pro being launched recently as well. Showmax Pro offers subscribers additional content alongside the traditional Showmax entertainment service, including music channels, news, and live sport streaming.
