Apple isn’t scared of making bold decisions with its products when it comes to pricing. They have always priced their products… aggressively. For this reason, many were extremely happy that the new iPhone 12 range of smartphones haven’t increased in price. In fact, in some cases they are even cheaper than last year’s model when looking at comparative storage options.

However, many have forgotten to mention that Apple needs to recoup than money elsewhere. So how is the Cupertino company squeezing more money from its customers? This year around you won’t receive earphones in the box, but arguably more surprisingly, there is no charger in the box either!
We are a week on from the launch of the new flagship iPhones, but at the live pre-recorded launch event there was only a quick mention of this change. According to Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental policy and social initiatives, “the iPhone box” will not include a power adapter or headphones.
This is supposedly for environmental reasons. Apple argues that most people that use the iPhone already have a charger and can therefore use that on the new device. While this may be true, many will be turned off from buying an iPhone for the first time, and many may need a new charging adapter as the previous has aged. Not only that, but the cable in the box is a USB-C to Lightning cable, but the USB-C cable is not compatible with the existing iPhone charging adapters. This means you’ll need to already own something like a Macbook to take advantage of that new cable. This new cable will also be used in the future if you want to use eventual faster charging.
So yes, the new iPhones may not have increased in price, but almost every customer that buys a new iPhone will need to buy a new charging adapter in any case, if they want to make use of the new charging standards. We don’t see the environmental impacting reduction in that.
