Whenever there is more competition in the market, the consumers win. The streaming wars are heating up significantly and with HBO Max coming to the fore, the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and Disney+ will need to pick up their game.
HBO Max are putting together a Friends reunion – one that has been rumoured for years. There have been possible movie scripts, one-off series scripts and social media engagement campaigns proposed for such a long time, as a dedicated Friends fan you have probably always been apprehensive but excited at the same time.
Reportedly, HBO Max will be bringing us this much vaunted Friends experience relatively soon, and it is costing them a pretty penny.
It’s the one where the gang gets back together. And this reunion will cost HBO $3 million per original cast member to come back. Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry will all return for a one-off special that’s set to debut along with HBO Max in May.
HBO Max is a huge launch for the premium HBO, which has always been a paid service. It paid more than $425 million in 2019 to secure the exclusive rights to Friends. So if you are watching it on Netflix, finish it before May rolls around. In their recent trailer, HBO Max puts Friends right at the top to show you they are serious about acquiring exclusive content.
As more streaming services come online, each one is vying for the best content. Yes, most want to acquire the rights to some of the most loved series and movies, but many are investing in quality original content to offset not being able to have all the best content from other studios. Netflix knew this would happen right away and are paying for and creating the most original content by a country mile.
Traditional cable and satellite TV services are feeling the pressure and losing subscribers in their droves around the world. They’ve had to adjust their business models accordingly and HBO Max is most likely going to spearhead that movement.
