Foldable phones are definitely here to stay, even after a lacklustre launch year in 2019. Manufacturers are still figuring out what the right form factor is, but at least we have options now. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a clamshell folding phone and brings one important improvement over all other foldable phones. It has foldable glass to protect the screen instead of a thin layer of plastic.
The folding design means it folds in on itself and turns a smartphone in to small, pocketable square. It has a 6.7-inch, flexible Super AMOLED screen. Samsung confirmed early in its Unpacked press conference that the screen is covered in fully flexible glass, meaning it should be dramatically more durable than the soft, plastic screens used in devices like the original Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X and the Moto Razr.
The crease in the folding area is still there, but not nearly as pronounced as on previous foldables. The screen also feels like glass, meaning you are more confident in pressing on its surface with a bit of force.
The Galaxy Z Flip has definitely benefited from the fact that it’s not Samsung’s first foldable (unlike all other rivals, at the moment), because it does seem more polished than other offerings. It has a Snapdragon 855+ chipset, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This is markedly higher end specs as on the Motorola Razr, which is the device it will most be compared with.
It also has two 12MP cameras on the top half – a main shooter and an ultra-wide accompaniment. The device can use these for selfies when the device is closed, because next to it is a small outer display that can serve as a viewfinder (more on this later). On the inside it also has a 10MP selfie camera in the now familiar hole-punch in the middle of the display.
It has a total battery capacity of 3,300mAh, split in two different cells on either side of the hinge. While we’re not sure what kind of battery life to expect from that, it is definitely much more capacity than is found in the Moto counterpart. It is also cheaper than the new Razr, coming in at $1380. While that is a lot, you can easily argue it is the best deal on any foldable phone to date. And it is actually cheaper than their new flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra.
What do you think about these new foldable devices? Would you spend your hard earned cash on it?
