Huawei VR launches the company into the virtual reality arms race

We’ve already seen the likes of Samsung LG enter the fray, and now with Huawei VR the company is set to join the virtual reality arms-race.

Google Cardboard might be the alternative for the rest of us, but Huawei has seen fit to join the virtual reality arena with its newest product, simply named Huawei VR.
The company’s VR headset was launched last Friday, and aims to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy VR headset, despite operating in the same mode as LG’s 360 VR; through a USB Type-C cable rather than a device cradle.

The Huawei VR headset is capable of displaying content through its own 639ppi display, which outmatches the recently released P9’s display, which bears a pixel density of 423ppi.
The headset bears a touchpad on its right hand side, and arrives with adjustable lenses and an anti-blue light filter to reduce stress on a user’s eyes.
Interestingly, the headset performs with a latency of 20 milliseconds and a wide 95-degree field of view.
Huawei have claimed that their headset is also the first to support 3D sound, and have boasted that the final product will arrive with abundant content, including some 4,000 mobile titles, 40 games, 150 panoramic tours, and 350 panoramic images.
We haven’t yet heard any sufficient information regarding when the VR will hit the shelves, though rumours suggest the headset could start shipping with the next few months.
It remains to be seen whether Huawei VR will be able to sufficiently compete with Samsung’s Oculus partnership, or Facebook’s VR headset itself. Gaming enthusiasts on the other hand will likely turn to the PlayStation VR and HTC Vive to fulfill their needs.
