Mark Zuckerberg’s surprise MWC appearance at Samsung’s Unpacked event promoted the future of virtual reality as a social platform.
Samsung’s presentation at MWC this year was full of unexpected (and some expected) announcements, but none more so than Mark Zuckerberg’s surprise MWC presentation where the Facebook CEO outlined the future of social platforms in virtual reality.
Zuckeberg is no stranger to virtual reality technology; previously, Facebook invested $2 billion in acquiring Oculus Rift, with the company’s headsets set to release this year.

At the event, Zuckerberg explained his life-long fascination with virtual reality; “I always thought there must be a way that’s instead of navigating to 2D websites, you could actually be there,” the CEO said.
The CEO went on to announce a partnership between Samsung and Facebook, with the view of enabling consumers to one day “put on a headset and that’s going to change the way you live, work and communicate.”
At MWC, Samsung announced that it will be giving Gear VR headsets for free alongside selected pre-orders of its new smartphone lineup.
“Gear VR is by far the best mobile experience… It provides the best hardware, with the best software. VR is going to be the most social platform.” Zuckerberg outlined.“I am excited to announce that we are bringing much more technology to VR in the next few weeks,” he said. “Facebook and Oculus are in this for the long term.”
The CEO further announced that Minecraft will further be available on Oculus Rift upon launch.
