Just shy of a month after Netflix’s arrival in South Africa, news has broken that local streaming service Vidi shut down.
Begun, the streaming wars have: Following a divestment from Tiso Blackstar, it has been revealed that the coming days will see South African video-on-demand service Vidi shut down.
Vidi was launched by the Times Media Group in September of 2014, and offered video-on-demand streaming capability and online movie rentals.

The service, which costed R149 per month at launch, slashed its subscription fee when rival ShowMax launched at R99 per month. The Vidi shut down follows a notice posted on the site’s front page on the 26th of January indicating that the website was “transforming”.
According to MyBroadband, an examination through Whois reveals that Vidi.co.za is no longer registered to Times Media Group, and is now registered to STS (Pty.) Limited – a wireless application service provider.
Thus far, STS Limited has not provided any comment on the news surrounding the Vidi shut down.
