We sat down with Bandwidth Blog writer Jaco van der Walt to chat about his favourite moment in tech this year; the launch of the Apple Watch.
Jaco van der Walt: “In April this year Apple made their first foray into the wearable market. The Apple Watch drummed up a lot of anticipation and everybody speculated whether Apple can reinvent the watch as they did with the smartphone.
The Apple Watch launched to much fanfare and offered a multitude of configurations. Essentially the Apple Watch debuted with two sizes, a 38mm and 42mm model. From there the customer can choose different watchbands (Watch Sport, the Watch and Watch Edition) topping out at an eye watering $10,000 USD.
In general, the wearables market, which includes both fitness trackers and smartwatches, will grow from 80 million units shipped in 2015 to more than 111.1 million units in 2016, according to recent estimates from IDC.
Tim Cook revealed earlier this year that sales of The Apple Watch is exceeding expectations, but we have no official word yet and other reports indicate that sales could be in trouble. The Watch has however gone from strength to strength. Apple produced probably the most integrated smartwatch on the market today and all indications point to the Cupertino company releasing a second watch in 2016.
Whether you like to Apple Watch or not, you can’t deny the impact it has had on the wearable tech market. Can Apple up the ante with their new Apple watch in 2016? We will have to wait and see…”
