MacKeeper exposes 13 million users personal data

The makers of MacKeeper are attending to a breach which has exposed the personal information of over 13 million of its users.

Kromtech, the company behind the controversial MacKeeper application, which claims to make Apple’s OS X more secure and stable, is cleaning up following a massive software breach.
The company formally acknowledged yesterday that a hole in security had exposed the usernames, email addresses and personal information of over 13 million customers.
The Germany-based company stated that it had no evidence that the leaked information was accessed or kept by malicious parties.
A Redittor named Chris Vickery published details of the breach on Sunday evening on the site’s forums, stating that “The data was/is publicly available… No exploits or vulnerabilities involved. They published it to the open web with no attempt at protection.”
Kromtech was quick to respond, writing that “Analysis of our data storage system shows only one individual gained access performed by the security researcher himself… We have been in communication with Chris and he has not shared or used the data inappropriately.”
MacKeeper, which is widely known through its aggressive pop-up ads, bills itself as a security suite comprised of antivirus software. However, the software has long been criticised over allegations of falsely flagging security issues in order to persuade consumers to buy the software.
