Uber is the latest company to join Microsoft’s Universal App initiative, and now has a dedicated Windows 10 app available on mobile, tablets and desktops.
Despite last week seeing former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer weighing in and punting that Windows 10 Mobile should run Android apps, Satya Nadella’s Universal App strategy has received a boost through the addition of a high-profile name; Uber.
Uber product team member, Yuixin Zhu, cited the ‘power of the Universal Windows Platform’ which has allowed the company to “deploy a single app through a unified store that delivers the right experience to whatever device downloads the app.”
The news means that consumers behind the monitor of a Windows 10 PC will be able to enjoy the services of Uber similarly to mobile and tablet users, where up until now Uber’s app development has largely been focussed.
The official Uber app features live tile updates, which can display the estimated time of an Uber driver’s arrival. Zhu stated that the company had “worked to upgrade the Windows 8 app to support the best of Windows 10, while also imagining the tablet and PC experiences, so that users could initiate rides from all devices.”
The news may yet see a boost to Microsoft’s strategy, which has lagged behind other App Stores in comparison.
