Throughout the latter half of the year, we’ve covered how introduction of backwards compatibility to Microsoft’s Xbox One console might save the system from it’s fall from grace; now, Sony have indicated, through an email from a PlayStation representative, that the company’s PlayStation 4 console will use emulation technology to run older titles.
The bad news? It might be limited to only PlayStation 2 games.
Sony’s representative suggested that the company is present working on introducing emulation technology to the PlayStation 4 in an effort to allow PlayStation 4 gamers to revisit older titles.
While there is presently no scheduled arrival date for backwards compatibility on the PS4, Sony have previously declined to state any interest in the area following Microsoft’s introduction of the feature to the Xbox One.
The official statement from the representative reads: “œWe are working on utilising PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.“
While the PlayStation 2 was one of Sony’s most-loved consoles, it is unclear as to whether the berth of older titles available for the console will be able to satiate a consumer interest in backward-compatible gaming systems.
