We are all well versed in the Apple-Samsung war that has dominated the smartphone market for around 6 years (since the Samsung Galaxy range started competing against the iPhone). Other manufacturers like LG, Sony and Windows Phone have tried to solidify the bronze position but they have not seen Huawei lurking in the background during 2015.
Chinese handset maker Huawei is placing increasing pressure on the industry giants after experiencing strong growth in China and Europe in 2015. According to Huawei – third-quarter deliveries climbed 81 percent and 98 percent in China and Europe respectively from this time last year and a third of the quarterly shipments were mid- to high-end models, up from 25 percent from 2014.
Huawei is now officially the 3rd largest manufacturer of smartphones globally. Nicole Peng (Director for research firm Canalys) stated – “It’s hard to find a solid contender to Huawei for the top three position (after Samsung and Apple) in the short term. That’s impressive growth.”
The Chinese company is projected to ship more than 100 million smartphones in 2015 (a 33% increase from last year). This outpaces forecasts for other major rivals including Apple, Xiaomi and Lenovo. This has led to a doubling of smartphone revenue in the first half of 2015 (in China).
Even with these impressive growth numbers, Huawei still remains a distant 3rd place to Apple and Samsung. This is primarily down to its low market penetration in the US (a huge smartphone market). Huawei aims to change all this in the near future, a huge step forward for a company which devices was once labeled a security risk in a U.S. Congressional report.
