In 2013 the video game industry made twice as much money as the movie industry worldwide. On PC, consoles and mobile, they are no longer the realm of the geeks and oddballs, everyone is in on the game.
Even Hollywood have tried to tap that market, but as all of us gamers know they very rarely get it right. It makes us both excited and nervous for the slew of big budget movies based on blockbuster games coming in the next couple of years. Here are the top 5 we‘re most excited about.
Angry Birds ““ May 2016
Many gamers that prefer to play on consoles and PC might scoff at the creation of this game, as they usually scoff at the games themselves (mostly because it is a mobile one). But you can‘t deny that the Angry Birds franchise has had a real impact on gaming around the world and is extremely powerful these days.
The 3D animation film is being produced by Sony Pictures Imageworks, and it‘s rumoured to have a budget of $80 million. It also has some real talent voicing the characters, such as Jason, and Peter Dinklage.
Warcraft ““ June 2016
This movie has been rumoured for years, ever since World of Warcraft became such a phenomenon. Then, the movie was confirmed but has spent years in development hell as they tried to get the right people on board.
The film will take place at the time when the Orcs‘ land was dying and they tried to take the Humans‘, sparking the massive war that the original games were based on. It has a large budget, as $100 million, and is to be created by motion capture CGI. Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell and Dominic Cooper will star in the upcoming feature film.
Assassin‘s Creed ““ December 2016
Ubisoft created its own production company a while ago, and many thought the main reason was to create this film. It did take a while thereafter before the film became official, but it has and will be starring Michael Fassbender as the lead assassin. Now doesn‘t that sound like a match made in heaven?
It is said that the movie will follow the events in the games, and become part of the same universe (therefore, what happens in the movies will also affect what happens in subsequent games).
Uncharted ““ June 2017
Naughty Dog‘s masterpiece series will also get a movie adaptation. The story follows Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter, and his journey across the world trying to decipher mysteries he might profit from.
The cast is very much unknown at this stage, with some rumours pointing towards Nathan Fillion and Mark Wahlberg being part of the project.
Last of Us ““ Unknown
Now this one just had to be on the list, didn‘t it? Another Naughty Dog game, masterfully created and loved by millions. We finally have confirmation of its existence, with the latest news being that the script is now being finalised.
Maisie Williams has been announced as the female lead, Ellie, which seems like a natural fit. We aren‘t sure about the male lead as of yet, but I nominate Hugh Jackman to play Joel.
What do you think about these game being made into movies? Any other games you‘d like to see be adapted? Let us know in the comments below.
