Their back! Just about four months after Jeremy Clarkson was dropped from the BBC motoring show Top Gear, Amazon has announced that a new Prime Video show featuring Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. JC was dismissed from the BBC after an altercation over on-set catering with one of the show’s producers.
This move could be a huge boost for Amazon’s streaming video service, which has enjoyed a limited amount of success so far ““ the award-winning Transparent has been the pick of the Amazon bunch but Netflix has been getting most of the headlines (and subscribers). A show similar to Top Gear could change the fortunes of Amazon Prime. The last Top Gear show featuring the ever popular trio attracted an audience of 5.3 million viewers, and a large chunk of those are just as interested in the presenters as the cars.
Currently there isn’t a lot of information around the new show and you will have to sign up to Amazon’s various social media channels for updates over the next year. Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman is also making the switch, and the new program is set to air in 2016.
Jeremy Clarkson stated to the press – “I feel like I’ve climbed out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship,” a jab aimed at the aging BBC. The name “Top Gear” will stay with the BBC, with Chris Evans on of the new presenters. Hopefully the new show won’t be called #Drive2Prime, the hashtag used during the Amazon announcement. I don’t know about you, but just might get a Prime account…
