According to recent reports, a source closely linked to Apple’s product plans has cited that the Cupertino company’s iPod lineup – specifically, the iPod touch – are expected to be updated later this year.
While the source in question couldn’t state with certainty, the rumour suggests that Apple might retain the 4″ screen size that is present on the current iPod touch model.
It is likely that in the development of a new iPod touch, Apple will likely seek to use prior technology developed for the iPhone. It is expected that, given that the current iPod touch uses the A5 processor chip found in the iPhone 4S, the new iPod touch may use either the A6 or A7 processor found in the iPhone 5c and 5s, respectively.
It is also speculated that a new iPod might arrive with a larger storage capacity. Presently, the iPod touch comes in capacities of 16, 32, and 64 gigabytes – leaving open the possibility of a new 128gb iPod to exist alongside the 128gb iPhone 6 and 6 plus.
It is likely that Apple might endeavour to upgrade the iPod’s storage capacity as the company, alongside U2, continue to refine a new music format which, according to U2’s lead singer Bono, blends high-fidelity music with an audiovisual format to feature album art more prominently.
iPod sales have slid in recent years, with the most recent 5th generation iPod touch having been left (untouched?) without an update since September 2012.
If the mood at Apple is an indication, the physical appearance of the iPod touch is expected to remain unchanged. For one, the company no longer reports unit sales for the iPod – which only shipped 2.6 million units in Q4 2014 – and instead combines sales iPod sales figures with services and the revenue from the upcoming Apple Watch.
