Nokia announced their Android phone, called the Nokia X, at Mobile World Congress 2014 last week. It won‘t look like any Android device when you turn it on and look at the OS, however. Nokia has completely changed the look and feel of Android ““ it is a “˜forked‘ version. This means that you won‘t get the Google apps and Play Store like on any other Android device, but will need to use Nokia‘s services.
The reasoning behind this, according to CEO Elop, is that if you make Android look enough like Windows Phone, that users will grow accustomed to the interface, and when it comes time to upgrade, would want to stay with the tile look of the interface, meaning they will upgrade to Windows Phone.
That being said, since it is still running most parts of Android, it is easy for Android developers to hack. This has already been done in a matter of week, with developers hacking the device to allow it to run the aforementioned Google apps and Play Store.
Whether this will be used at all by the mainstream is very unlikely, but if it would be, it would blow Elop‘s theory out of the water.
