The four big telecoms companies in South Africa have been constantly lowering prices in the fast expanding market to attract as many new and recurring users as possible. In just a matter of years, mobile data prices have tumbled to the joy of the consumer. This trend is likely to continue into the near future as we get more connectivity options and internet lines connected worldwide.
But which company in SA offers the best mobile broadband speeds and where are the fastest areas? Ookla is a company which measures mobile broadband performance metrics in the country and the latest results make for some interesting reading.
The site uses test results from mobile apps including Speedtest.net and it shows that the average download speed in South Africa is 5.94Mbps. Compare that to the global average download speed of 7.54Mbps and we don‘t seem to be as far off as one might have thought.
According to the Net Index website, Sandton has the highest average mobile broadband, followed by Bryanston and Cape Town. This is quite an interesting result, as I‘m sure the experience of different customers in the same areas fluctuates drastically.
