We know that Microsoft only has a couple of key partners when it comes to Windows Phone, and is surely looking to expand on those. We now get news that Microsoft is in talks with Sony to release a Windows Phone device in the coming year.
While there’s no guarantee of a deal, the partnership could introduce a handset as soon as mid-2014. The device may even carry the VAIO badge, and it could serve as a vehicle for Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services. Even if the discussions fall apart, Microsoft may have more hardware manufacturers lined up.
There are also talks with ZTE to get more Windows Phones into China. A big problem that Microsoft has had to entice prospective customers is that there is a hefty licencing fee attached when using Redmond‘s OS. That drove a lot of manufacturers toward Android, which is open source. That might be changing however, with reports that Microsoft could be willing to cut or even waive the OS licensing fees.
What do you think the future holds for Windows Phone? Are you a fan of the platform?
