Apple trumps Android in Christmas sales.

The little green android has taken the fight to Apple in almost all technology areas in recent years. And it is safe to say that in certain areas Android has been wiping the floor with the Cupertino based company. There is however one area that Apple still rules with an iron fist and that is Christmas day sales. Although most people usually do their shopping before Christmas day, the actual day accounts for one of the largest retail days (apart from Black Friday and Cyber Monday :)) in the US. A report from IBM’s Digital Analytics benchmark hub indicated that the sale in Apple‘s iOS devices made up 23 percent of all e-commerce orders, whilst Android devices only accounted for 4.6% of total sales. What is also interesting is that the average iOS buyer spent $93.94 per order, nearly twice that of Android users, who spent $48.10 per order.  iOS also led as a component of overall traffic with 32.6 percent vs. 14.8 percent for Android. Mobile devices has also become a popular internet retail tool. IBM’s data shows that 29% of all internet sales on Christmas day was done using mobile devices (up by 40% from last year). Smartphones was found to be more popular for browsing whilst tablet users spent more money. What is also interesting to see is the effect that social media platforms have on internet sales. Online buyers referred to products via Facebook spent $72 on average whilst buyers referred through Pinterest, an online scrap-booking app, spent almost $87 per order. IBM’s data does still show that customers that came from Facebook were four times more likely to make a purchase than the Pinterest users. This may be due to the fact that people probably trust their friends more when being referred a potential product.
