If you were looking for safer (and more fun) way of unlocking your Mac, then the newly launched app, Knock, will be just for you.
Instead of using the traditional password-locking and unlocking method, Knock allows you to unlock your Mac by simply knocking on your paired iPhone.
If knocking isn‘t really your thing, you can also wave your iPhone in the air and your Mac will unlock itself to be at your service.
The app works by connecting you iPhone to your Mac via a Bluetooth LE connection. This will enable your phone to automatically detect when it is close to your paired computer.
The app is being marketed as “œsuper secure“ and will use “œlow power“ because of the Bluetooth LE connection it uses.
Knock was founded by William Henderson and Jon Schlossbeg. Although Knock only launched today, these two guys are aiming to take Knock even further. The company plans to take the idea of Knock into the world of browsers to lock into websites, too.
The company‘s claims of Knock being “œsuper secure“ is because, according to them, the passwords are encrypted and will not be transferred to any other Mac than yours.
However, Knock is not available for all Mac and iPhone users. Because of it‘s Bluetooth LE connection, the app will only work with and iPhone 4S and up. Also, only newer Mac‘s will be able to be unlocked by Knock
Mac models that are compatible with Knock include the 2011 MacBook Air and up, 2012 MacBook Pro, 2012 iMac, 2011 Mac Mini and up and, of course, the 2013 MacBook Pro.
While it has only been available for download for a couple of hours, Knock seems to be giving no significant problems. The only flaw that slightly knocks down the process, is if you quit the app on your iPhone. Apparently, re-establishing the link between iPhone and Mac might be a little troublesome.
