Google Acquires Bump Technologies

Google has acquired their 8th company for 2013 – and this one is actually rather cool.Bump
Mega-corporation, Google, has acquired Bump Technologies as of yesterday.
Bump Technologies released a statement on their blog yesterday, September 16th, stating that they are now part of the Google family.
Bump said that hey are “œthrilled“ to have joined the almighty Google, as they share the same belief in making communication and connectivity all around the world easier.
Bump Technologies, which was founded in 2008, is most famous for it‘s popular app – simply called Bump – that allows you to share files, photos and contact information by literally bumping your smartphones together.
The Bump app works in two ways; the app running on your device incorporated with a smart running algorithm running on Bump‘s servers in the clouds.
The matching algorithm “˜listens‘ to the different bumps from smartphones all around the world (I know, it sounds like something from a sci-fi film). When a “˜matching‘ bump occurs – this is when both smartphone users bump their phones together the same way – the algorithm pairs the phones that felt the same bump.
Obviously, a (very) strong internet connection is needed for the “˜bumping‘ to work successfully.
It is amazing to think that Bump is almost 5 years old. It made it‘s official debut on the Apple App Store in March 2009 and has been described as “œone of the apps that helped define the iPhone“.
However, it wasn‘t long before Bump broke into the Android market. In November 2009 it made it‘s debut on Android devices.
It is reported that Google paid Bump Technologies anywhere between $30 million to $60 million to fully acquire them.
And it seems “˜bumping‘ to share information or files is quite a popular thing. Bump reported that in March of this year they had 125 million downloads of their file sharing app.
Bump is not only a clever app, but a cool one, too. Who wouldn‘t want to simply bump your phone with your mate‘s and voila – a picture is shared!
Congratulations, Google – I bet you‘re (fist) bumping all the way to the bank.
