Founded in Cape Town in 2005, Tourism Radio has claimed one of the coveted finalist spots at Africa App Quest 2013, a travel application competition held in conjunction with the 6th Annual E-Tourism Africa Summit, in Cape Town.
At least 70 entries were received from developers across the continent with the judge‘s criteria taking into account that the entrant was an application, product or service used in the travel trade, or by tourists themselves, and that the developers must be citizens of an African country. Judges included representatives from E-Tourism Frontiers, South African Tourism, VISA, the Kenya Tourist Board, and TripAdvisor.
Tourism Radio was selected as one of four finalists who “œuse innovative thinking and technology to produce creative, dynamic opportunities to increase and improve tourism in Africa“. The other finalists included Wild Africa Live, a crowd-sourcing app for animal-watchers; Pixshare, a photo sharing social media tool; and Activity Bridge, a real-time hotel and tour booking platform.
Representatives of the four developers presented to the audience at Africa App Quest, who then went on to vote for the final winner. Wildlife Africa Live claimed the top spot, winning over the audience with its impressive real-time animal location sharing capabilities.
Tourism Radio CEO Mark Allewell says, “œWe‘re delighted just to have been given the opportunity to take part in this year‘s Africa App Quest and are more than happy to claim the title as one of the top apps on the continent. As a Cape Town-based developer, we‘re constantly looking for ways to showcase South African apps on a global scale, and we‘re sure Wildlife Africa Live will be able to hold the torch high. We look forward to improving our offerings in preparation for next year‘s competition.“
Allewell maintains the company looks at apps not only from the mobile phone perspective, “œWe‘ve produced location-aware travel technology for eight years now, and have firmly set our sights on wearable computer platforms like Google Glass. That is the future of travel, and the next evolutionary step for Tourism Radio.“
