Ubuntu, the open source developer backed by South African Mark Shuttleworth, has launched its latest project on crowdfunding site indiegogo in order to raise funds for its Ubuntu Edge device.
The Ubuntu Edge is the first device to come from Shuttleworth’s company, Canonical.
The device, a smartphone and desktop PC combined, is described as “the next generation of personal computing” and “proving ground for the most advanced mobile technologies on the horizon, a showpiece for true mobile innovation.”
The company has so far raised over £3.5 million from enthusiastic backers out of a goal of £32 million with just 29 days remaining to support the project.
As for the hardware, the device will feature a 4.5-inch screen, a multi-core central processing unit (CPU), 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage and a battery using silicon-anode technology.
The Ubuntu Edge will dual-boot both the Ubuntu phone OS and Android, and convert into a fully integrated Ubuntu desktop PC.
