Two African-made apps have been announced as winners at this year’s Microsoft Imagine Cup held in Russia.
The competition, of which the final ceremony hosted almost 1000 students, judges, Russian dignitaries and members of the global media, is according to the site “the world‘s premier student technology competition” and helps students break new ground in the industry, be part of creating the next wave of games and applications and learn new technological skills.
The winning apps made up 87 student teams from 71 countries that competed in the finals after winning local and online competitions around the world.
The first winning app, Matibabu, was developed by Uganda-based Code 8 who walked away with $12, 000. The app for Windows Phone lets users diagnoses malaria without a blood sample. It does so by connecting a custom built piece of hardware to the phone. The results, that are sent to the user’s SkyDrive, can be kept as medical records and shared with doctors.
The second app, Videolater, from Egyptian Team MASKed Ninjas received a review process to enhance and deliver their Windows 8 apps projects. The app that runs on Windows 8/Windows Phone provides users with a video most relevant to an article or any surface that has a text which can be scanned.
