Exclusive: local mobile credit card payment app launching in April

CheqOut, a new local mobile credit card payment app, will be launching in April.
The app, a local take on Square, aims to empower small retailers, merchants and individuals, who cannot afford the fees associated with credit card facilities, the ability to accept credit card payments directly from their mobile phones and will  initially be available to both iOS and Android devices.
CheqOut founder Bradley Elliott explains that “95% of the SA economy is based on small businesses, however not all of them can afford the costs of credit card facilities or land lines because their turnover isn’t high enough. CheqOut’s aim is to empower these small businesses by providing them with an additional low-cost payment method and basic point-of-sale system.”
Users will sign-up for the service via the CheqOut website or app and fill in their banking details afterwhich CheqOut will send them a card reader at no charge. Once received, they will have the ability to receive credit card payments directly from their phone. The funds will clear in the user’s bank account within 48 hours and CheqOut will only charge one competitive flat rate per transaction with no additional monthly fees.
The app gives users the ability to add products, product categories, track sales, send receipts and even track a customer’s spend. Users will also have the ability to add multiple users to their account, allowing waitresses and other staff to accept payments.

Another important aim for CheqOut is to provide small businesses with the mobility required to conduct their business from where ever they operate. A taxi driver or an individual with a stall at a market can now accept credit card payments with the credit card reader and their mobile phone.
Due to the nature of the service, CheqOut’s primary concern is safety and so it has developed a 3-layer security system as well as various fraud detection systems both on their side and with the bank itself and every precaution has been taken to ensure the integrity of the system.
As part of its launch, CheqOut is giving a limited amount of users the opportunity to utilise the service with zero transaction charges for the first month.

  1. Awesome! I hope CheqOut will be able to accept debit cards as well.  So many more of those around than credit cards.  Have they mentioned how they will be dealing with chip and PIN cards?  Sure you could just swipe them, but if there is fraud it will be at the merchants risk, much like shopping online.

  2. Just wondering what that one flat rate is going to be, and also about chipped cards. Still, brilliant for small moving businesses if it’s not going to he too much.

  3. Thanks Mark!
Unfortunately, we’re at the mercy of the card companies when it comes to debit cards. Visa & Mastercard are working hard to roll out a world-wide debit card solution. Having said that, most of the new debit cards are actually cheque account cards and can be used through CheqOut.
With regards to chip & pin cards we’ll initially be swiping them as the chip based readers are currently only available for IOS and push operating costs fees upwards. We’re confident that our system is secure and intelligent enough to pick up any fraudulent transactions. We’re also aware that a larger volume of transactions will be processed through the system than say that of an online store, which actually benefits us- the larger the volume of transactions, the easier it is to pick up fraudulent ones.

    1. Hi CheqOut,
Any indication of the price? There is no info. on your website.
Will your software accept CnP (card not present) transactions?

      1. Hi Dylan,
We’ll be announcing fees on launch but assure you these will be highly competitive.
The only time the app will accept a CnP transaction is when a swipe has failed. Even then, the users signature will still be required to protect the merchant.

        1. Thanks for the reply.
The reason why I ask; I was recently introduced to a product called VCpay. The product allows the user to recreate one-time virtual MasterCard to transaction where ever CnP transactions are accepted. I feel quite safe using VCpay then my actual credit card.
Just a side thought: Isn’t is possible for me (the merchant) to write an application that runs on the ios/android device. Whenever a client swipes their card, I store the card details(PAN/Exp Date/CVV)? This could create a fraud risk?
I hope you don’t take this question the wrong way; I don’t mean to create bad publicity.
It would be good to know how square actually deals with this problem.
Anyway; All the best for you new business :)

          1. Hey Dylan,
Yep- very valid question. Similar products to CheqOut  have exactly the same unsolved problem last we heard.
They were looking into switching over to card readers that encrypt the audio stream, and we’ll do the same once available.
If you, the merchant, own a card reader then you can attempt to steal data in a variety of devious ways if you want – CheqOut is an uninvolved party.
An enormous effort is required to write a phishing app. Even if someone did create a rogue app, they’d have to get it onto the App Stores, etc as card decoding won’t work from a pure web app.Hope this helps.

          2. we currently use booksure.com for all credit card transactions, if your card fees are less than 3.5% for VISA/MC & 4.5% for AMEX/DINERS we will move immediately.

    2. I am wanting to move from the conventional expensive credit card machine to something like CheqOut has. please could you give an update on your progress regarding debit cards and software for android.

  4. We started using SQUARE mid Jan 2012 It was like a dream come through . We were one of the first high volume Small business’s to use the Square system on our new I pad. Apple ‘s officers came down to see it in action, Square Called us (after a week of high sales) and gave us a welcome . Then about five days ago the dream became a NIGHTMARE . In the middle of transactions The app sent us error Signs . so easy just give them a call =YOU CAN NOT CALL THEM. So off went dozens of e mails. 2 days latter we get one back Reload the program. Now this Cafe is in the Hart of Williamsburg Brooklyn, Tons of soft /hardware Nurds just about live here.I the Cafe. The Problem is on their end . me and the nerds did everything , Call Apple, Called Verizion, all said it is on there end. The email response from SQUARE Try to load it up on your cell Phone. We have it on three of our cell phones and now all the nerds have it on their phones. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS BAD BAD BAD. Yes Now Pay Pal the E bay Wonder Looks real Nice Now. And Yes You can Call Them.

  5. I have cheqout downloaded on my ipad, but cant use it because my account is in review, please give advice

    1. We have received confirmation that CheqOut had to be shelved due to Visa/Mastercard EMV requirements and therefore an Android version will not be launching.

  6. I downloaded the app, registered and tried out a payment. It worked without a hitch.
    Really excited about this innovation
