Vodacom Announces 20GB for R499 Promotion

Vodacom today announced a promotion which will see data costs for Prepaid and Top Up customers reduced by 87%. This promotion introduces Vodacom‘s lowest per megabyte Prepaid mobile data price of 2.4c.

This data promotion launches on 7 November 2011 and will continue until 9 January 2012.

The price reduction will apply to Broadband Advanced MyGig 20 Prepaid and Top Up once-off data bundles, now priced at R499. The normal retail price of the My Gig 20 Advanced bundle is R3620. The new promotional price gives a saving of R3121.

Chris Ross, Managing Executive: Commercial Development at Vodacom says, “œOffering increased value to our customers is our top priority, which is why we‘re excited to offer this significant data price reduction to our Prepaid and Top Up customers.  With this promotion, we are providing our customers great value for the festive season.“

All Broadband Advanced MyGig 20 Prepaid and Top Up once-off promotional bundles purchased will be valid until the last day of the next month; thus if a bundle is purchased in November 2011, the bundle will be valid until 31 December 2011 and if the bundle is purchased in December 2011, the bundle will be valid until 31 January 2012. Bundles purchased in January 2012 will be valid until 29 February 2012.

Customers interested in purchasing unlimited Broadband Advanced MyGig 20 promotional bundles can do so through the following Vodacom Prepaid sales channels:

  • Multiple bundles may be bought in one month.
Now Vodacom – this is the kind of pricing we need on a more permanent basis. At this price 3G will soon replace ADSL in many homes.
  1. This’ll be a good trial to sniff out the demand at this price range. 20GB actually gets you a fair bit – all we have to hope for now is that enough people jump on this deal to make it stick 🙂

  2. What media24 should rather find out from Vodacom is how Vodacom can expire pre-paid data after 2 months, when s63.3 of the Consumer Protection Act specifically states that pre-paid goods or services can only expire after 3 years!
THAT would be offering media24 readers some much needed consumer journalism instead of just re-publishing media statements.

    1. Oddly, the only other piece of information I got from this article, is that 2012 is a leap year. 😛

    2. Mike – I think that is actually being investigated by some government departments right now. I think their argument is that part of the charge of data bundles is the hosting of the services and keeping infrastructure in place. So that when you access that data, the infrastructure is in place.
      Also found this interpretation: (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/business/20430-cpa-and-3-year-prepaid-data-rollover.html)
Nicholas Hall from Michalson’s Attorneys explained that this is unfortunately not the case. “If you look at Section 63 [of the Act] it is envisaging a physical thing that can act as money in exchange for goods or services or be used to acquire those goods or services at a later date,” Hall said. “So it would apply to cellphone vouchers for airtime or vouchers for data bundles.”For example, if you had a data bundle voucher it must be redeemable up to three years after you purchased it. Once you have redeemed it, however, the actual data does not need to roll over for the next month (or last for three years), Hall explained.
But yes, I agree with you totally. While I dont think the data should be valid for 3 years, 2 months is way too short.

  4. Now maybe they’ll come clean about “airtime transfer”, we are all being ripped off thinking we can transfer contract airtime to others. You can’t, you actually pay again even though you may have thousands of minutes accrued

  5. 8ta’s 10GB for R200 is still cheaper. Vodacom only kicked into gear with a more realistic (although temporary) price offering in response to 8ta’s offering. Would be nice if they had come up with such pricing before 8ta came on the scene. That would have showed some sincerity in their statements about wanting to provide true value to their customers. I’m quite happy with 8ta.

  6. All good and well with the price reduction and then its only for top up and prepaid customers, Also look at your loyal contract customers who pay obscene prices for data, so your contract customers is basically funding the price reduction for the campaign, ive been a loyal contract customer to vodacom for over 10 years, and all promotions are always just for pre paid customers….

    1.  why are you on contract for data anyways? We’re you not aware of the impending price drops of data? South Africa is one of the last vestiges of these ridiculous data prices. Hopefully it will soon be a thing of the past.

  7. That’s all very nice and well if you can use 20 gig in two months. As a private user, between 1 and 2 Gigs is about my limit, and even then I don’t always sue what I bought before the 2 month period is up.Any balance left over Vodacom steal from you, which of course is against the CPA. But Vodacom being who they are won’t be bothered about such a minor detail! If you complain they throw the T & C thing at you. this whole thing of buying and selling data is one big scam in this country, and only makes the providers very rich. OPverseas I get far better deals that make the local lot look silly.

  8. A rip-off man, they still win. How will a normal household finish 20gb in 2 months. You lose your credit after 2 months, there’s not suppose to be a time-limit on this promotion

  9. I have a simple solution to these ridiculous prices, terms and conditions of these service providers.
Buy a blackberry with a fast data connection. Crack the damn thing (if need be) to bypass the file size limit (not difficult at all). Email yourself all the download links so you can receive these emails on your blackberry.. then you simply use your blackberry to download. Simple as that. I have already downloaded 20+ gigs last month.. all for the cost of the blackberry service connection. R69. Vodacom & MTN can suck my balls

    1. Hi Cruz
Please email me cyrus1 at telkomsa.net or andre at
      petrolstationsforsale.co.za
I have a Blackberry and would like to do what you have done.
I am not that clued up with this technology

      Kindest regards

  10. WooHoo!…NOT!
8*TA is still cheaper and more consumer based…
offering R199 for 10Gb (which would = R389 for 20GB) Still R110 Cheaper than Vodacom.
*Yes it’s a 24 Month Contract but still worth it in my opinion.
Sorry Vodacom… but you still suck (…our blood dry that is) No wonder you went RED. It suits you perfectly… You finally did something right. It suits your persona.
    Oh but wait… There’s More…!
8*TA also allows you to carry your data balance over to the next month which is rightfully MINE!!! considering I paid for it and did not just rent it for a month.
You don’t Fill your Petrol tank up to the brim at the beginning of the week and then drain the remaining petrol out before you “Top Up” Again… Do You!?
Forfeiting your Data Bundle at the end of the month is daylight robbery. It’s Mine! I paid for it!
I hope this remains on here as an eye opener to the poor souls out there being bleed dry and blindly robbed like I was. I’m glad I changed to 8*TA. This is purely my opinion and I am in no way associated to 8*TA in any way other than being a Very, Very Happy Customer. All 8*TA need to do is get their own email server up and running and not use Hotmail (A small splinter in their offer, but nothing to cry about – at least it’s not a dagger).
    Enjoy.

  11. Yes but what they didn’t tell anyone is than the speed is limited to less than 3mb per second. Can’t even watch youtube… or play online games anymore. Even with 93% signal strengh. Thanx Vodacom. Luckily I decided not to renew both my contracts because of this.

  12. on my other sim card with 1gb data for R285… same modem, same computer… runs like a charm.
What’s up with that Vodacom. Called customer services… those noobs told me it’s my modem. BS
