YouTube launches instant-play gaming hub in South Africa

YouTube has expanded its platform offerings in South Africa with the rollout of Playables, a dedicated section featuring lightweight, instant-play games. The feature allows users to jump into games directly within the YouTube mobile app or web browser without requiring downloads, installations, or additional hardware.

While the Playables tab is integrated into the main Gaming hub for YouTube Premium subscribers, non-subscribers can access the full catalogue directly at youtube.com/playables.

  • Background Playback: On supported devices, users can play games while continuing to watch or listen to YouTube video content in the background.
  • Android Requirements: Requires YouTube app version 20.46 or later running on Android 8 or higher.
  • iOS Requirements: Requires YouTube app version 20.44 or later running on iOS 14 or higher.

YouTube’s initial Playables lineup in South Africa spans casual, puzzle, and simulation genres, led by popular titles such as:

  • Home Rush: Draw to Home (3.3 million plays)
  • Gas Station: Junkyard Tycoon (2.0 million plays)
  • Other Popular Titles: Car Crash Test BMG, Dress Up 3D, Crowd Wars 3D, Kick and Run, Idle Racer, Racing Limits, and Global Idle Airline Tycoon.

Gameplay progress automatically syncs across any device logged into the user’s Google account. Save data is managed under YouTube History > Interactions (with one save file per game) and does not influence the platform’s video recommendation algorithm. Google confirmed it will continue expanding the Playables catalogue with new titles moving forward.
