Despite only launching in 2020, YouTube Shorts has grown into a social media powerhouse, matching rival Instagram Reels with a staggering 200 billion daily views. To build on this momentum, YouTube has announced a major interface overhaul designed to make the Shorts experience more “intuitive.” The update introduces several highly requested features, including double-speed playback, a clear screen mode, and the complete removal of the dislike button.

While YouTube hid public dislike counts across its platform years ago, it is now removing the dislike button entirely from the Shorts player.
- The Replacement: The standard “Like” thumb icon has been replaced with a heart icon to offer a “more meaningful way” to engage with videos.
- Algorithm Tuning: To replace the feedback loop of the dislike button, YouTube will rely entirely on its backend controls. “Instead, we’ll rely on our more precise controls, ‘Not Interested’ and ‘Don’t recommend this channel,’ to more accurately tune your feed,” the YouTube team explained in an official blog post.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users on Reddit noted that removing the button makes it significantly harder to flag “AI slop” or low-quality clickbait. Conversely, others argued that the dislike button historically muddled engagement logic, and that explicitly marking content as “Not Interested” is a more effective way to train the recommendation engine.
In an obvious nod to TikTok’s popular minimalist layout, YouTube is introducing a new Clear Screen mode. Acknowledging that on-screen text and icons can sometimes feel like “splotches on your windshield,” the platform now allows users to completely strip away the user interface via the three-dot settings menu.
YouTube has also redesigned the muting gesture to prevent accidental audio blasts in public spaces. Instead of a single tap instantly silencing the video, users must now tap the video once to pause it, and then tap a dedicated “mute” button that appears on screen.
Rounding out the update is what YouTube describes as the “most requested feature” for Shorts: 2x playback speed. Users can now instantly accelerate a video to double speed simply by tapping and holding down on the screen. To maintain the fast-forward effect without holding a thumb down, users can drag downward to lock the speed for the remainder of the clip.
The new features are currently rolling out globally. Because the deployment is utilizing a staggered approach, availability varies by region; some users may notice playback features live while button modifications remain pending.
