Nintendo surprised fans with a dedicated Star Fox Direct broadcast, pulling back the curtain on a ground-up remake of the beloved Nintendo 64 classic. The remake introduces a heavily stylized aesthetic, giving the anthropomorphic cast a tactile appearance reminiscent of modern stop-motion animation. Described by Nintendo as a “cinematic take” on the original narrative, the game features fully voiced cutscenes and immersive mission briefings to expand the story between stages.
While the classic campaign structure and memorable radio banter between Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy remain intact, the game introduces several mechanical and structural updates:
- Difficulty Scaling: The core campaign features Easy, Normal, and an unlockable Expert mode designed to challenge veteran pilots.
- Challenge Mode: A new single-player variant featuring fresh objectives across existing stages.
- Co-Op Mechanics: Local co-op allows two players to tackle the campaign together, with one taking the role of the pilot while the other operates the Arwing’s weapon systems as the gunner.
The most substantial addition to the classic formula is a dedicated four-on-four online Battle Mode. Launching with three distinct arenas, the mode offers unique team objectives tailored to different environments:
- Corneria: A tactical, control-point style game mode.
- Fichina: A fast-paced crystal collection challenge.
- Sector Y: A resource-gathering fetch quest competing directly against space pirates.
Players can queue publicly or host private matches. The title will also natively support GameShare for both local wireless and online play, allowing multiple players to join the action easily.
Taking advantage of the Switch 2 hardware, Star Fox utilizes the platform’s advanced features to offer high-fidelity interactive avatars within GameChat, allowing players to appear as members of the Star Fox team during voice calls. Control options have also been modernized, featuring compatibility with the re-released N64 controller alongside the updated Joy-Con 2 precision motion controls.
The preview concluded with a look at the game’s prologue sequence, showcasing classic Arwing manoeuvres, such as boosting, braking, and the iconic barrel roll, as well as the underwater Blue-Marine submersible navigating the oceans of Aquas. The footage also teased deeper narrative lore, featuring appearances by Fox’s father, James McCloud, and the treacherous Pigma Dengar.
