Xbox CEO teases Microsoft’s next-gen console with Project Helix

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is officially pulling back the curtain on Microsoft’s future in the console space. In a recent post on X, Sharma revealed that the company’s next-generation hardware is codenamed “Project Helix.” Confirming long-standing industry rumours, she stated that the system is designed to “lead in performance” and, in a significant shift for the ecosystem, will natively play both console and PC games.

Sharma’s announcement comes just weeks after her appointment as CEO following the departure of longtime head Phil Spencer. While the executive shakeup followed a turbulent year for the Xbox brand, “Project Helix” represents a bold attempt to pivot. Sharma is expected to dive deeper into the system’s architecture at GDC next week, where she will meet with partners and developers to discuss the roadmap for the hardware.

The “Project Helix” reveal raises several fascinating questions about Microsoft’s strategy. By merging the PC and console libraries, is Microsoft essentially building a high-end PC masquerading as a traditional console? It remains to be seen what specific performance benchmarks the company is targeting or what the physical hardware will look like, but the ambition is clear.

For the first time in years, the momentum in the “console wars” feels unpredictable. If Microsoft follows the playbook of the original Xbox, cutting a generation short to launch a more powerful successor, they could gain a massive head start. If rumours of a PlayStation 6 delay prove true, “Project Helix” could give Microsoft a multi-year lead with next-gen hardware, potentially shifting the balance of power in the industry.
