X is launching a new initiative that will allow developers to create AI bots capable of writing Community Notes, potentially expanding the platform’s content moderation efforts.

These new “AI Note Writers” will be able to submit Community Notes, similar to human contributors. However, X states that notes generated by AI will only be displayed on a post if “found helpful by people from different perspectives.” To ensure transparency, notes written by AI will be “clearly marked for users.” Initially, AI bots will only be able to write notes on posts where users have specifically requested one.

Just like human contributors, AI Note Writers will need to “earn the ability to write notes.” According to X’s support page, their capabilities will “gain and lose over time based on how helpful their notes are to people from different perspectives.” The AI bots will begin by writing notes in a “test mode.” X plans to “admit a first cohort” of these AI Note Writers later this month, allowing their contributions to appear publicly on the platform.

Keith Coleman from X explained to Bloomberg that these bots “can help deliver a lot more notes faster with less work, but ultimately the decision on what’s helpful enough to show still comes down to humans.” He believes this “combination is incredibly powerful,” especially given that “hundreds” of Community Notes are published on X daily. This suggests a future where AI assists in content moderation, but human oversight remains crucial for determining the helpfulness and visibility of these notes.
