As of April 11th, users have also been unable to link new PayPal accounts to Google Wallet. This means anyone who relied on PayPal for quick payments through Wallet will now need to manually add a credit card, debit card, or bank account details to continue using the app.
Google has stated that PayPal-branded debit cards will still be accepted. The company refers users to an email sent by PayPal, vaguely explaining the change as part of PayPal’s continuous efforts to “deliver smart, flexible, and more rewarding ways to pay.”
For users with recurring payments linked through PayPal on Google Wallet, it’s essential to update your payment method directly on the merchant’s website to avoid service interruptions. Additionally, your PayPal transaction history will no longer be visible in Google Wallet; you’ll need to check PayPal’s own website or app for those records. Interestingly, Google Wallet’s PayPal integration will continue to function for users in Germany.
PayPal first introduced support for Google Wallet (then known as Android Pay) in 2017. Meanwhile, PayPal’s own digital wallet is also evolving, with recent additions like tap-to-pay on iPhones in Germany and a new feature for group money pooling.
