Huawei has introduced its high-end, Z-shaped tri-fold Mate XT smartphone in South Africa with a starting price of R70,000. This positions the device as a premium offering, despite the introductory nature of the pricing.

The Mate XT, a three-way foldable phone initially announced globally in September for US$2,800, showcases Huawei’s design capabilities in the smartphone market, even amidst ongoing US technology supply restrictions. Folding phones have gained traction in China, and Huawei likely views the Mate XT as a “halo” product.
When fully unfolded, the Mate XT boasts a tablet-sized 10.2-inch display that conveniently folds down to pocket size. Huawei claims it is the thinnest unfolded smartphone globally at just 3.6mm, yet it still incorporates a 5.5x telephoto lens alongside an ultra-wide lens in its camera system.
Huawei attributes the Mate XT’s design to an “engineering breakthrough” in its hinge mechanism, which allows for both inward and outward folding. The company emphasizes the hinge’s durability, constructed with ultra-high-strength steel to withstand frequent use.
While volume sales of the Mate XT are unlikely in the price-conscious South African market, Huawei may find a niche among high-end business users seeking innovative technology.
Alongside the Mate XT, Huawei is also launching the more accessible, yet still premium, Mate X6 smartphone. This device features dual OLED displays that unfold to a 4.6mm thickness and boasts a 50-megapixel primary lens with a 10-stop adjustable aperture system.
The Huawei Mate XT will retail for R69,999, with cellular operators offering it from R2,999 to R3,099 per month over 36 months.
The Huawei Mate X6 will be priced at R44,999, or available through operators from R1,599 to R1,799 per month over a 36-month contract.
