Launched in September, the Windows app offers features like multimonitor support, dynamic display resolutions, and streamlined access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Microsoft has stated that “connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked after May 27th, 2025.”
It’s important to distinguish the retiring Remote Desktop app from the longstanding Remote Desktop Connection application, which has been a part of Windows for over two decades. This latter application will remain available in Windows 11 after May 27th and can still be used for machine connections until Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) support is incorporated into the Windows app.
The reference to RDP support suggests that Microsoft may eventually extend Windows app compatibility to personal accounts. Currently, the app is limited to work or school Microsoft accounts. This aligns with Microsoft’s broader vision of transitioning Windows to the cloud, aiming to “enable improved AI-powered services and full roaming of people’s digital experience.”
