Volkswagen bets on affordable EV with the €20,000 ID. EVERY1

Volkswagen is aiming to revitalize its struggling business with the ID. EVERY1, a promised €20,000 (less than R400,000) electric vehicle designed to democratize EV ownership. As Tesla struggles to deliver on its entry-level promises and competition from Chinese EVs intensifies, VW hopes to shake up the market with this affordable model.

Positioned below the previously announced €25,000 ID. 2all, the ID. EVERY1 is currently slated for European release in 2027, following the ID. 2all’s 2026 launch (model names are likely to change closer to production).

This compact hatchback, sharing software and modular design elements with the ID. 2all, is part of VW’s new “Electric Urban Car Family.” Built on a front-wheel-drive version of VW’s modular electric platform (MEB Gen 2), these EVs are being developed under the Core brand group, with nine new models expected by 2027.

Performance and range are modest, as expected for the price. The concept ID. EVERY1 boasts a 94 horsepower (70kW) electric motor, a top speed of 81mph, and an estimated 155 miles (250km) of range, suggesting a roughly 35kWh battery.

Measuring 3.88m in length, the ID. EVERY1 accommodates four passengers and offers 300L of boot space.

VW highlights the ID. EVERY1’s “powerful” new software architecture, promising over-the-air updates to address past software issues. Design-wise, the car blends elements from small SUVs, VW’s Up and Polo models, and the ID. Life concept, with a “flying roof concept” to maximize interior headroom.

Modular features from the ID. Buzz are integrated, including a movable centre console and a dash rail for accessories. A removable Bluetooth speaker enhances the interior experience.

Beyond vehicle pricing, VW is actively cutting costs through workforce reductions, aiming for billions in annual savings.

The affordable EV segment is heating up, with competitors like Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, and Ford all promising lower-cost models to challenge the growing presence of Chinese EVs. Volkswagen’s ID. EVERY1 represents a crucial step in this competitive landscape.
