Tesla competitor BYD launched major push in South Africa

BYD, often referred to as “China’s Tesla,” is poised to significantly expand its presence in South Africa with the introduction of three new models this year: the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid bakkie, the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV, and the all-electric Sealion 7 coupé-SUV. This strategic move signals BYD’s ambition to compete aggressively within the South African automotive market, particularly in the burgeoning new-energy vehicle sector.

While specific launch dates, pricing, and detailed specifications for the South African market are yet to be revealed, the new models have already garnered attention in other markets, providing insight into their capabilities.

The Shark 6, potentially South Africa’s first plug-in hybrid bakkie, is a double cab boasting a 2.5t towing capacity and an 835kg payload. Its hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5l turbocharged petrol engine with a 29.5kWh Blade battery and a 150kW/340Nm electric motor, delivering a combined output of 320kW/650Nm. This translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7s, a claimed electric-only range of 100km, and a combined range of 840km. The Shark 6 is expected to enter the competitive South African bakkie segment with compelling pricing.

The Sealion 6, known as the Song Plus or Seal U in other markets, will mark BYD’s second SUV offering in South Africa. This five-seater, featuring a recent facelift, provides ample boot space and a stylish design. While various powertrains are available in China, the export version will feature a plug-in hybrid system, likely offering two options: a 1.5l petrol engine with an 18.3kWh battery and a single electric motor, or a more powerful all-wheel-drive version with a turbocharged petrol engine and dual electric motors.

Completing the trio is the all-electric Sealion 7 coupé-SUV, which debuted internationally last year. This model will be available in single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations, both powered by an 82.5kWh Blade battery. The dual-motor variant delivers impressive performance, accelerating from 0-100km/h in 4.3s. The Sealion 7 will expand BYD’s electric vehicle lineup in South Africa, joining the existing Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal models.

South African consumers eagerly await the official launch details, including pricing and specifications, for these new BYD models.
