This move by X has raised concerns about free speech and the platform’s approach to third-party services. Signal, known for its strong encryption and privacy features, is widely used by journalists and whistleblowers to communicate securely.
While links to the Signal.org domain and other messaging services like Telegram remain accessible, the blocking of Signal.me links raises questions about the platform’s intent.
This incident follows a pattern of X restricting links to competing platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and Substack. However, unlike these instances where competition was a clear factor, Signal.me does not directly compete with X as a social media platform.
