The YouTube Kids mobile app is getting a significant redesign, introducing a more streamlined look and improved functionality similar to the standard YouTube app. For the first time, kids will also be able to browse videos in portrait mode. The updated design is rolling out on iOS and Android over the coming weeks, while the web and smart TV versions will remain unchanged.

Since its last major overhaul in 2017, YouTube Kids has retained a playful, child-centric aesthetic. This update modernizes the app with a cleaner interface inspired by recent design changes to the main YouTube platform, moving away from its earlier, toy-like appearance.
One of the most noticeable changes is a redesigned carousel for content filters at the top of the screen. Clearly labelled by topics such as Gaming, Shows, Music, and the educational “Explore” tab, the filters now take up less horizontal space for a more polished look.
Key navigation elements like Home, Search, and Profile, previously located at the top, have been shifted to a new bottom navigation bar. This bar also introduces a “Your Stuff” page, a dedicated section for accessing downloaded, shared, or previously watched content. Parental controls and other settings remain accessible through shortcuts in the upper-right corner, next to the Cast button.
The redesign marks a significant visual and functional upgrade, aiming to make YouTube Kids more intuitive and engaging while maintaining the platform’s focus on safe and kid-friendly browsing.
