Apple will compete with ChatGPT with “LLM Siri”

Apple is reportedly planning a significant AI upgrade for Siri, transforming it into a more conversational assistant akin to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Live, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Dubbed “LLM Siri,” the revamped assistant will utilize Apple’s AI models for more natural, fluid interactions.

The update aims to expand Siri’s capabilities, enabling deeper integration with third-party apps via App Intents and using Apple Intelligence to summarize and compose text. While an announcement may come as early as next year, Apple plans to fully implement the new system by spring 2026.

Apple’s Craig Federighi recently highlighted Siri’s practical focus compared to ChatGPT. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he explained, “ChatGPT can write a poem or answer questions about quantum mechanics, but Siri opens your garage and helps you send texts quickly and locally. These capabilities will eventually converge.”

Although Apple has been cautious with its AI rollout, it recently introduced ChatGPT integration in the iOS 18.2 beta. More features are set for release next year, including Siri’s ability to “understand” on-screen content and perform app-specific actions.

Apple’s measured approach reflects its focus on balancing utility, privacy, and innovation, with LLM Siri promising to redefine its role on iPhones.
