South Africa has taken a significant step towards enhancing its energy grid’s reliability and sustainability by awarding two new grid-scale battery energy storage projects. These projects, part of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), will add a substantial 360MW of storage capacity to the national grid.

The two successful bidders, Oasis Aggeneis and Oasis Nieuwehoop, are joint ventures between EDF International and a consortium of local partners, including Mulilo Energy, Gibb-Crede, Pele Green Energy, and a community trust. These projects, located in the Northern Cape province, will not only contribute to the country’s energy security but also stimulate local economic development and job creation.
