Following the recent launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony reported that it has sold a total of 65.5 million PlayStation 5 units as of Q2 2024. Although console sales dropped by 1.1 million units compared to the same period last year (and have decreased by 2 million units overall in 2024), game sales more than made up for the decline. Sony sold 77.7 million game units in Q2, marking a 14.9 percent increase from Q2 2023. PlayStation Network’s monthly active users held steady at 116 million, despite a notable price hike late last year.

The financial outcome? Revenue rose by 9 percent, while operating profit surged by an impressive 73 percent, reaching 445.1 billion yen (R52 billion). With the PlayStation 5 Pro—a higher-priced and likely more profitable console—now in the market for the holiday season, Sony is optimistic about the rest of the fiscal year and has raised its revenue forecast accordingly.

One of the major contributors to Sony’s game sales success has been the action RPG Black Myth: Wukong, which reportedly sold 20 million units in Q2, including sales on PC. Additionally, the first-party title Astro Bot performed strongly, illustrating the impact that hit games can have on overall sales.

Sony’s fiscal year runs through March 31, with upcoming first-party titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadow and Monster Hunter Wilds scheduled for February 2025. Fiscal 2025, beginning in April, promises to be even more lucrative, with highly anticipated titles such as Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Grand Theft Auto VI set to release later in the year.
