We are getting a new Star Wars film trilogy

The future of Star Wars on the big screen just got even murkier. According to reports from Deadline and Variety, Lucasfilm has brought in Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the X-Men franchise, to write and develop a new Star Wars trilogy. Kinberg will collaborate with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy to bring the films to life.

The exact direction of this trilogy remains unknown. Deadline speculates that it could continue the Skywalker saga, making these episodes 10–12, or it could be a completely new storyline. It’s also possible this trilogy may tie into the three other Star Wars movies Lucasfilm announced last year, with directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached. Previously, Lucasfilm confirmed that Obaid-Chinoy’s project would feature Daisy Ridley’s Rey, who returns to establish a new Jedi Order.

No matter what direction Kinberg’s trilogy takes, the announcement highlights the challenges Lucasfilm has faced in bringing Star Wars films into a new era. While the franchise has grown on Disney Plus with popular series like The Mandalorian, The Acolyte, and Ahsoka, the big screen has remained dark since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Currently, the only confirmed theatrical release is a Star Wars spin-off: a Mandalorian and Grogu movie set to arrive on May 22, 2026.
