Google is expanding its Gemini AI assistant across its software suite, introducing several enhancements for Google Maps. Users can now ask conversational questions in Maps for suggestions on destinations or specific types of locations, with Gemini providing tailored answers. If users view a particular location in Maps, Gemini can also deliver summaries of reviews, offering a quick overview of local highlights. These AI-powered features will roll out this week on the Android and iOS Maps app.

The Immersive View feature, launched last year, is also getting an upgrade. With AI support, Maps can now predict what a location will look like at a specific date and time, helping users get a more accurate sense of conditions. Immersive View will expand to cover 150 cities worldwide, including Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt, and will feature new place categories, such as college campuses.
Driving directions are being updated to enhance user experience on the road. Users can now add stops along their routes to explore landmarks and points of interest. Additionally, navigation details are more precise, providing clearer directions for complex manoeuvres like lane changes and merges. This improved driving experience will be available on Android and iOS, starting next month across 30 major metro areas.
Waze, Google’s navigation app, is also receiving an upgrade with Gemini. The new “Conversational Reporting” feature will allow drivers to use natural language to report road conditions or hazards, streamlining communication for a safer and more informed driving experience.
Lastly, Google Earth is integrating generative AI capabilities, especially beneficial for urban planners who require fast access to detailed geographic data. This AI addition aims to streamline city planning and environmental assessments.
